Kalian the name of a mosque and minaret in Bukhara, an outstanding masterpiece of Middle Asian architecture. Together with the Mir-Arab Madrasa (1536) the Kalian forms the central ensemble of the city—the Poi Kalian. The round minaret (1127) is covered with bands of ornamental brickwork and inscriptions. The mosque, part of which was built in the 15th century and part in 1514 on the site of a 12th-century mosque, is majestic in its dimensions (130 by 80 m); its court has four mans and is surrounded by galleries with cupolas.
