Axenfeld, Israel

Born 1787 in Nemirov, Podolia Province; died 1866, in Paris. Jewish writer in Yiddish; a notary by profession. Emigrated.

The works of Axenfeld are inspired by ideas of enlightenment. He wrote novels, plays, and tales, most of which were never published and are probably lost. His published plays are The First Jewish Recruit (1862), Husband and Wife, Sister and Brother (1867), Betrayed World (1870), and From Riches to Poverty (1870); he also published a novella, The Headdress (1861).
