Iwakuni

(ēwä`ko͞onē), city (1990 pop. 109,530), Yamaguchi prefecture, SW Honshu, Japan, on the Aki Sea. The site of Iwakuni International Airport, the city contains petrochemical, paper, and metal machine-tool industries. The Kintai Bridge, built in 1673, is famous for providing residents with an escape route from floods.

There is a petrochemical combine. Its industries in clude nonferrous metallurgy and machine building. There are also facilities for the production of textiles and paper.
