Karnai, Ali Magometovich

Born Jan. 6(19), 1904, in the village of Bol’shie Shady, in present-day Mishkino Raion, Bashkir ASSR; died June 16, 1943. Soviet Bashkir writer. Member of the CPSU from 1940. Fought in the Great Patriotic War of 1941–45 and died at the front.

Karnai’s works were first published in 1924. In 1928 he published the collection of stories Turning Point. He depicted, on a broad, epic background, the transition of the peasantry to collectivization (the novella Fires on the Steppe, 1932), the birth of the petroleum industry in the Bashkir republic (the sketch “Ishim-bai,” 1935), and the struggle of the working people for Soviet power (the novella We Shall Return, 1940). He also wrote for children (the collection The Lark, 1936; Russian translation, 1970). He translated the works of A. S. Pushkin, N. V. Gogol, and other writers.
