Karolos Kun

Born 1908 in Bursa, Turkey. Greek stage director.

Kun opened the People’s Stage Theater with D. Divaris in Athens in 1934, seeking new forms for a national theater (it closed in 1936). In his later work in other theaters, Kun produced psychological dramas, based on the work of the Russian theater and the Stanislavsky system. In 1942 he opened the Art Theater in Athens, where he introduced Chekhov’s dramas to the Greek stage, including The Cherry Orchard in 1945 and Uncle Vanya in 1960. Kun strove for unity in ensemble acting, for expressiveness in staging, and for the combination of psycho-logical profundity and expression. Kun stages works by Shaw, Brecht, and contemporary Greek dramatists.
