Karpovka Reservoir

 

a reservoir formed in 1952 on the Karpovka River in Volgograd Oblast, RSFSR. It is the largest reservoir on the V. I. Lenin Volga-Don Ship Canal. Area, 42 sq km; volume, 0.16 cubic km; length, 15 km; maximum width, 3.2 km; average depth, 4 m. Its level fluctuates within a range of 1 m. With the aid of pumping stations, the Karpovka Reservoir regulates flow on a seasonal basis. Created for transportation purposes, the reservoir is also used for irrigation and water supply. Bream, pike-perch, common carp, zope (Abramis bailerus), and pike are fished commercially.
