the official name for the population of Iran. The ruling circles of Iran include in the number of Iranians—in addition to the Persians, who constitute almost half of the country’s population—other peoples who profess Islam (Azerbaijanis, Kurds, Lurs, Turkmen); only peoples professing other religions (Armenians, Assyrians, Jews) are considered national minorities.
