a reservoir on the Hi River in theAlma-Ata and Taldy-Kurgan oblasts of Kazakh SSR. It beganto be filled in 1970. Area 1, 850 sq km; volume, 28. 14 cu km;length, 180 km; maximum width, 22 km; average depth, 15. 2 m;maximum depth, 45 m. Its water level varies over a range of 4m; the reservoir is used for the long-term regulation of waterflow. Its water is used for production of electric energy andirrigation. The reservoir is also a recreation site for the inhabitants of Alma-Ata and other cities of southern Kazakhstan. Thecity of Kapchagai is located on its shore. [11–1098^]
