Jeno Hamburger

Hamburger, Jenő

Born May 31, 1883, in Udvarnok; died Dec. 14, 1936, in Moscow. Figure in the Hungarian working-class movement; a physician by education.

During World War I, Hamburger headed the Nagykanizsa organization of the Social Democratic Party of Hungary and led the workers in antiwar demonstrations; he was persecuted for his revolutionary activity. In the Hungarian Soviet Republic of 1919 he served as people’s commissar of agriculture, as a secretary of the Socialist Party of Hungary, and as a corps commander in the Hungarian Red Army. After Soviet power in Hungary was crushed, Hamburger went into exile. From 1923 he lived in the USSR, where he was deputy director of the Central Institute of Roentgenology and Radiology.
