Christensen, Jens Christian

 

Born Nov. 21, 1856, in Påbøl; died Dec. 19, 1930, in He. Danish statesman and political figure; teacher by profession.

From 1890 to 1924, Christensen was a deputy to the Folketing and served as its chairman in 1912–13. He was leader of a parliamentary faction of the Venstre party from 1891 to 1897 and party leader from 1897 to 1908. He was minister for ecclesiastical affairs and public instruction in 1901–05, prime minister and minister of defense in 1905–08, and defense minister in 1909. His policies were aimed at strengthening the armed forces. From 1916 to 1918 he served as a minister without portfolio and from 1920 to 1922, as minister for ecclesiastical affairs. He left government and politics after 1924.
