In the scenic foothill region of the E Andes, it is the center of an agricultural, mining, and cattle-raising area. It was in Jujuy that Manuel Belgrano, the patriot general, created the first Argentine national flag. Juan Lavalle, after a futile attempt to depose the caudillo Juan Manuel de Rosas, was killed in Jujuy in 1841. There are interesting native ruins nearby. Jujuy is also known as San Salvador de Jujuy.Jujuya province in northwestern Argentina. Area, 53,200 sq km; population, 302,400(1970). Its administrative center is the city of Jujuy. In the west the province extends over an alpine desert plateau, known as the puna. The eastern part of the province contains the slopes of the Cordillera Real. Tin, polymetals, iron ore, sulfur, and copper are extracted in the west; tobacco and sugarcane plantations are located in the east. There is sawmilling industry in Jujuy. Enterprises of the ferrous metal industry are found in Zap la. Food industry enterprises are located in the city of Jujuy. Sheep and mules graze in the alpine pastures. |
