Jonas Avizius

Avižius, Jonas

 

Born May 15, 1922. Soviet Lithuanian writer.

Avižius was born into a peasant family and in 1948 published his first collection of stories, The First Furrows. The novella Inheritance (1949; Russian translation, 1951) depicts the first stage of kolkhoz life in a Lithuanian village. The Soviet village is also the subject of the novella Glory (1949), the play White Willows (1954), the collections of stories and sketches Liberation (1951) and People and Events (1954), and the novel Village at the Crossroads (1964). He has also written a novel about Lithuania’s past, The Glass Mountain (1961). Russian translations have been published of The River and the Banks (1960), Village at the Crossroads (1966), and the collection Novellas and Short Stories (1953).
