Intervision

(in Russian, Intervidenie), an international television organization founded in January 1960 within the framework of the International Organization of Radio and Television Broadcasting to implement the exchange of programs between participating countries and the preparation of programs to be distributed throughout its network. The organization’s headquarters are in Prague.

The members in early 1972 were the television organizations of Bulgaria, the Byelorussian SSR, Czechoslovakia, East Germany, the Estonian SSR, Finland, Hungary, the Latvian SSR, the Lithuanian SSR, the Moldavian SSR, Poland, Rumania, the Ukrainian SSR, and the USSR; the television organizations of Yugoslavia also participate in Intervision. The permanent bodies are the Intervision Council, the Center for Technical Coordination, and the Center for Program Coordination. The predominant programming is news reporting and sports events, but in addition there are broadcasts of music, entertainment, and children’s programs. One of Intervision’s important tasks is to arrange international cooperation in television through the use of earth satellites. In late 1971 there were more than 70 million television sets in the member countries. Since 1961, Intervision has regularly exchanged programs with Eurovision.
