Kalitin, Nikolai Nikolaevich

Born Mar. 29, 1884, in Pavlovsk; died Aug. 21, 1949, in Leningrad. Soviet meteorologist; one of the founders of Soviet actinometry. Honored Scientist of the RSFSR (1948).

Kalitin graduated from the University of St. Petersburg in 1911. That same year he began working at the Main Physics (later Geophysical) Observatory, where he subsequently became director of the divisions of actinometry and atmospheric optics. Under his direction, a network of actinometric stations was organized in the USSR. His principal works were devoted to the study of the radiation climate of the USSR, the methodology of actinometric measurements, and problems of heliotherapy. Kali-tin invented a number of actinometric and atmospheric-optical instruments.
