Kalkan
Kalkan
Black Sea Turbot (Scophthalmus maeoticus; also, Rhombus maeoticus), a fish of the family Bothidae, order Pleuro-nectiformes (Heterosomata). Length, to 1 m; weight, to 10 kg.
There are large bony spines on the body of the kalkan. The fish is found in the Black and Adriatic seas and in the eastern Mediterranean. It leads a sedentary life on the bottom of the sea, feeding on fish and crabs. The fish spawn from April to June; the female deposits 1.5–12 million eggs. The larvae become asymmetrical after reaching 12 mm in length, and at a length of 3 cm the young fish move to the bottom. The kalkan is valuable commercially.
