Kawasaki

a city on the island of Honshu in Japan, in Kanagawa Prefecture. Population, 973, 500 (1970). Kawasaki is situated on a plain between Tokyo and Yokohama. Together with these cities and other cities on the western shore of Tokyo Bay, it forms the core of the Kwanto industrial region. It is the chief center for the building and repair of ships in Japan. Also important are machine building (electronics, telecommunications equipment, and vacuum instruments) and both ferrous and nonferrous metallurgy. There is a petrochemical combine and two ethylene plants, each producing 300, 000 tons yearly. Other industries include automobile manufacturing (buses and trucks), the construction of heavy power machinery (turbines) and equipment for nuclear power plants, and the production of cement and refractory materials.
