(Karen State), a national autonomous state in the Union of Burma, in the southeastern part of the country, in the basin of the lower course of the Salween River. Area, 30,000 sq km. Population, 795,000 (1969). The principal city is Pa-an. Tin, tungsten, and antimony ores are mined in Kawthule State. Valuable teak is logged and treated. Rice is the staple crop. [13_864-3]
