The karranay was formerly used in Middle Asia and Iran as a mili-tary (signal) instrument. It was subsequently used duringceremonial processions of khans and military leaders. The kar-ranay was among the instruments in ensembles of strolling musi-cians. It is used in the Tadzhik SSR and the Uzbek SSR as aceremonial instrument at parades, demonstrations, and massfetes. This instrument is also found in a number of Orientalcountries.
