(yä`khĭmôf), Ger. Joachimsthal, town, NW Czech Republic, in Bohemia, in the Erzgebirge [ore mountains]. The productivity of its uranium mines, once extensive, has declined since World War II. It is also a noted health resort, with thermal radioactive springs. Jáchymov was the main center of silver mining in Europe after the 16th cent., but its present output is negligible. The word Thaler, from which dollar is derived, is an abbreviation of Joachimsthaler, the name of a coin first struck there in the 16th cent.

Summers are warm, with an average July temperature of 17°C, and winters are mild, with an average January temperature of –2.6°C; annual precipitation totals 1,000 mm. Jáchymov has radioactive (271 m curie/1) and thermal springs (28.6°C), the hydrocarbonate-sodium-calcium waters of which are mainly used for baths and bathing in medical swimming pools. Disorders of the vascular system, musculoskeletal system, and the peripheral nervous system are treated. The resort has balneological clinics, sanatoriums, and various hotels, including boarding hotels.
