Karvonen formula

(kăr-vōn′ĕn) A calculation of the optimal range of heart rate for achieving physical fitness during cardiovascular endurance exercise. The calculation is based on a percentage of predicted maximum heart rate of 220 minus the person's age (HRmax) and the resting heart rate (HRrest). The formula that determines the best physical training range is: HR = HRrest + (HRmax − HRrest) (.60 to .80).
