(Historical Archive). (1) An irregularly issued collection of documentary publications on the history of pre-revolutionary Russia. Ten issues were published by the Institute of History of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR from 1936 to 1954. The editors in chief of Istoricheskii arkhiv were B.D. Grekov (1936–53) and A.A. Novosel’skii (1954).

(2) A scholarly journal published by the Institute of History of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, with the participation of the Institute of Marxism-Leninism of the Central Committee of the CPSU and the Central Archival Administration of the Council of Ministers of the USSR. The journal was published in Moscow six times a year from 1955 to 1962. Istoricheskii arkhiv published documentary materials on the history of the USSR of the pre-revolutionary and Soviet periods; materials on the CPSU and the international workers’ movement; articles on the study of sources, archival materials, and early texts; and critical and bibliographical materials. It also published information on scholarly conferences and a chronicle of foreign archival affairs. The editors in chief of the journal were V.I. Shunkov (1955–60) and D.A. Chugaev (1960–62).
