Kapur, Raj

 

Born Dec. 14, 1924, in Peshawar. Indian actor, motion-picture director, and producer.

Kapur was both actor and artist in the theater of his father, Prithviraj Kapur. In the 1940’s he became a screen actor. In 1947 he founded Raj Kapur films (Bombay) and directed his first film the following year. Kapur’s popularity came with The Tramp (1951), Master 420 (1955), Under the Cover of Night (1957), and I Am a Clown (1970), all characterized by elements of protest against caste prejudices and social injustice. Kapur is an original lyricocomic actor and dancer with great charm and musicality.
