It flows N from the N Urals into the Kara Sea, forming part of the traditional border between European and Asian Russia. It is navigable in its lower course.Karaa river running chiefly along the border between Arkhangelsk and Tiumen’ oblasts, RSFSR. The Kara is 257 km long and drains a basin area of 13, 400 sq km. It arises on the slopes of the northern end of the Polar Urals and flows into Baidarata Bay (the Kara Sea), fed chiefly by melting snow and rain. It freezes over in October and thaws in June. The Kara is navigable in its lower reaches. KARA
