Kellogg, William Pitt

(1831–1918) U.S. senator/representative; born in Orwell, Vt. A Union veteran, he was elected to the U.S. Senate (Rep., La.; 1868–72, 1877–83). As one of the so-called carpetbaggers, he won a disputed election to governor of Louisiana (1873–77) that nearly led to civil war in the state. He also served in the U.S. House of Representatives (1883–85).
