(äd dēwän`ēyä), city, S central Iraq, on a branch of the Euphrates River and on the Baghdad-Basra railroad. It is a marketplace for dates and grains.

Ad Diwaniyah

 

a city in Iraq, on the Hillah River, an arm of the Euphrates. It is the administrative center of Kadisiya Mukhafaza (district). Population, 60,600 (1965). It is linked with Baghdad and Basra by railroad and highway. Ad Diwaniyah is the commercial center of a rich agricultural region producing grain (chiefly rice) and dates.
