Irish Socialist Republican Party ISRP

the first Marxist organization in Ireland. It played a major role in the propagandizing of Marxism and the formation of the proletarian movement in the country.

The ISRP was founded on May 29, 1896, by a group of progressive workers and intellectuals headed by J. Connolly. It proclaimed the creation of a socialist republic in Ireland as its goal and the winning of national independence and the struggle for universal suffrage and an eight-hour workday as its immediate aims. It advocated an alliance with all progressive forces of the national movement. After Connolly left Ireland for the USA in August 1903 (he returned to his homeland in 1910), the ISRP ceased to function because of its inability to overcome organizational weaknesses.
