itabirite

[‚ēd·ə′bi‚rīt] (geology) A laminated, metamorphosed, oxide-facies iron formation in which the original chert or jasper bands have been recrystallized into megascopically distinguished grains of quartz and in which the iron is present as thin layers of hematite, magnetite, or martite.

Itabirite

 

(name derived from Itabira, Brazil), a type of quartzite, rich in iron-ore minerals and containing some muscovite and sometimes fine grains of gold. Itabirite is used as an iron ore.
