Kalmyk University
founded in 1970 in Elista from the Kalmyk Pedagogical Institute, which was established in 1964. As of 1972 the university included departments of physics and mathematics, biology, history and philology, agriculture, and general technology; 19 subdepartments; 41 training and scientific laboratories; a scientific research section; and a library with 250,000 volumes. In 1972 the university’s enrollment was 3,200 (in its daytime, evening, and correspondence divisions), and there were about 200 instructors, including approximately 100 with scholarly degrees and titles.
