Kaltan

a city in Kemerovo Oblast, RSFSR; located on the Kondoma River. Railroad station on the Novokuznetsk-Tash-tagol line, 12 km south of Osinniki. Population, 28, 000 (1970).

Kaltan came into being in 1946 in connection with the construction of the Southern Kuzbass State Regional Power Plant (put into operation in 1951), and in 1959 the settlement became a city. There is coal mining (for the state regional power plant), as well as a plant for making auxiliary boiler equipment and pipelines. The city has an evening power engineering technicum.
