Kamaishi

 

a city and port of Japan, in the northeastern part of the island of Honshu, in Iwate prefecture. Population, 73,000 (1970). The port of Kamaishi occupies first place in the freight turnover of the economic region of Tohoku. It is the center of the country’s principal iron-ore basin (approximately one-half of Japan’s iron ore), which is located 15 km west of the city of Kamaishi. There is a large metallurgical enterprise in the city as well as knitted-goods and fish-canning enterprises. Kamaishi is the fishing center of northern Honshu. [11–709^]
