Italian Socialist Party of Proletarian Unity

(ISPPU; Partito Socialista Italiano di Unita Proletaria), existed from 1964 to 1972. The ISPPU was formed in January 1964 by representatives of a leftist trend who had seceded from the Italian Socialist Party in protest against the reformist policy of its leaders. The ISPPU adopted a policy of cooperation with the Italian Communist Party and other leftist forces in Italy in the struggle for the vital rights of the Italian working people and for socialism. In foreign policy the party supported active neutrality on the part of Italy, withdrawal from NATO, and friendship and cooperation with the USSR and other socialist countries. The ISPPU had 182, 000 members in 1971. In 1972 an extraordinary congress of the ISPPU decided to disband the party and have its members join the Italian Communist Party.
