Italian Villa style

Italian Villa style

(1830–1880)The main feature of this style is the combination of a tall tower with a two-story L- or T-shaped floor plan. Gently pitched roofs resembling the pediment of Classical temples had wide projecting eaves. Windows are grouped into threes or placed within arcades. A smooth stucco finish highlighted Classic simplicity, while exuberant ornamentation recalls the Baroque. The overall massing is asymmetrical, intending to produce a picturesque quality, coupled with a low gable or hipped roof and wide eaves supported by decorative brackets, based on Italian farmhouses. Features also include square or octagonal towers, cupolas or glass belvederes, bay windows and ornamental brick.

Italian Villa style

A term often used as a synonym for Italianate style.
