Szinnyei, József

 

Born May 26, 1857, in Bratislava; died Apr. 14, 1943, in Budapest. Hungarian linguist. Academician of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (1896).

Szinnyei graduated from the University of Budapest in 1878. He began teaching at the University of Budapest in 1883 and at the University of Cluj in 1886. In 1928 he became head librarian of the library of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. His research was devoted to comparative Ural-Altaic linguistics, the Hungarian and Finnish languages, and Hungarian literature. Szinnyei edited and published early Hungarian-language texts. In 1896 he became editor of the journal Nyelvtudományi közlemények.
