In north-central MN, west of Hibbing; original county; established Oct 27, 1850 (prior to statehood). Name Origin: For Itasca Lake; name coined by explorer and ethnologist Henry Rowe Schoolcraft (1793-1864), who thought the lake was the "true source" of the Mississippi River. From Latin: the last part of veritas 'truth' and first part of caput 'head.'
