Kazakh Polytechnic Institute

(full name, V. I. Lenin Kazakh Polytechnic Institute). The institute was founded in 1960 in Alma-Ata on the basis of the Kazakh Mining and Metallurgical Institute, founded in 1934.

The institute has (1972) the departments of mining, metallurgy, geological survey, construction engineering, engineering economics, petroleum, architecture, automation and computer technology, energetics, and geophysics and a general technical department. The institute has a correspondence school; a branch in the city of Rudnyi; general technical departments in the cities of Leninogorsk, Ust’-Kamenogorsk, and Karatau; and a graduate school. It also has 85 subdepartments, six branch laboratories, and three laboratories dealing with fundamental problems. Its library has 706, 000 holdings.

During the 1971–72 academic year there were 13, 500 students at the institute and more than 900 instructors, including eight academicians and corresponding members of the Academy of Sciences of the Kazakh SSR, 29 doctors of sciences and professors, and more than 300 candidates of sciences and docents. The Kazakh Polytechnic Institute has the right to accept doctoral and candidate dissertations for defense. The institute has been publishing Sbornik nauchnykh trudov since 1938. In 1970 the name of V. I. Lenin was conferred upon the institute. Over the years, the school has trained 13, 800 specialists.
