intraocular lenses

intraocular lenses

Rigid, or flexible and folding, plastic optical lenses that are placed in the lens capsular bag after the cataractous and opaque contents have been removed either by emulsification or extrusion, and washout. Loss of the natural lens defocuses the eye markedly and additional optical power averaging 15 dioptres is required. This can readily be provided by an intraocular lens. Foldable lenses allow the whole cataract operation to be performed through a very short incision that may require no sutures.
