Jastrun, Mieczysław

Born Oct. 29, 1903, in Korolevka, in what is now the Ukrainian SSR. Polish poet.

Jastrun studied at the University of Kraków from 1923 to 1928. He participated in the resistance movement. Jastrun’s poetry of the 1920’s and 1930’s bears traits of symbolism. His postwar poems, which deal with problems of war and the fascist occupation, were written in the traditions of national romantic poetry. Since the second half of the 1950’s he has tended toward a historical and philosophical interpretation of the accomplishments of human society and an ethical evaluation of its past and present. Jastrun also translates foreign poetry, including Russian poetry.

Jastrun received the State Prize of Poland in 1950 and 1955.
