Karachaevsk
(Mikoian-Shakhar until 1944, Klukhori from 1944 to 1957), a city (since 1929) in the Karachai-Cherkess Autonomous Oblast (part of Stavropol’ Krai, RSFSR). It is located on the Kuban’ River (at its confluence with the Teberda River), at an elevation of 900 m, on the Sukhumi Military Road, 45 km south of the Dzheguta railroad station (terminus of the branch from the Armavir-MineraPnye Vody line), 60 km southwest of Cherkessk. Population, 15, 000 (1970). Industries include a tool plant, food industry, and the manufacturing of building materials. Karachaevsk is the site of a pedagogical insitute.
