Karageorgevich

(Karadjordjević), in the 19th century, a princely dynasty (from 1903 to 1918, the royal dynasty) in Serbia; later the dynasty in the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes (1918–29) and in Yugoslavia (1929–45, de facto until 1941).

The founder of the Karageorgevich dynasty was Karageorge (Karadjordje Petrović), who ruled from 1808 to 1813. The members of the dynasty were Alexander (prince from 1842 to 1858), Peter I (king from 1903 to 1921), Alexander I (king from 1921 to 1934), and Peter II (king beginning in 1934). Peter II fled abroad in April 1941, after the occupation of Yugoslavia by fascist troops. On Nov. 29, 1943, the second session of the Antifascist National Liberation Council of Yugoslavia forbade Peter II to return to the country. The abolition of the monarchy was announced in the Constituent Assembly on Nov. 29, 1945.
