(käräj`), city (1991 pop. 442,387), Tehran prov., N Iran, on the Karaj River. It is an agricultural market and a transportation center. Chemicals are manufactured there.

a city in northern Iran; located in Tehran Province (ostan) in an oasis on the Karaj River. Population, 48,000 (1971). Karaj is a highway junction and the site of a railroad station. The city’s most important industries include sugar, chemicals (the production of superphosphate and insecticides), textiles, and leather and footwear. There is also an automobile assembly plant.
