Kara-Kala

an urban-type settlement and the center of Kara-Kala Raion, Krasnovodsk Oblast (since Dec. 27, 1973), Turkmen SSR. Situated in the foothills of the Kopetdag on the Sumbar River (a tributary of the Atrek), 91 km south of the Kizyl-Arvat railroad station on the Krasnovodsk-Mary line, with which it is linked by highway. Population, 5, 700 (1972). The Turkmen Experimental Station of the Ail-Union Horticultural Research Institute and a state fruit nursery are located there. A sovkhoz specializing in subtropical crops is nearby. Kara-Kala has a people’s amateur theater.
