intravascular ultrasonography intravascular ultrasonography The use of ultrasound imaging by means of a transducer within a blood vessel. This has become possible by the development of ultrasound probe catheters small enough to be inserted into a coronary artery and other peripheral arteries. The method produces detailed images of the interior walls of arteries and is especially useful in assessing plaque morphology and volume in cases of ATHEROSCLEROSIS. The method can also be used for STENT placement and the assessment of plaque regression during statin therapy. |
