Kamensk-Ural’skii
a city in Sverdlovsk Oblast, RSFSR, located at the confluence of the Kamenka River and the Iset’ River (of the Ob’ River basin). Railroad junction of lines to Sverdlovsk, Kurgan, Serov, and Cheliabinsk. Population, 173, -000 (1972; 51,000 in 1939).
Kamensk-Uralskii arose at the end of the 17th century as a settlement attached to a cast-iron smelting works and foundry, which was put into operation in 1701. The settlement became a city in 1935. During the years of Soviet power, ferrous and nonferrous metallurgy, machine-building, metalworking, and building-materials enterprises, as well as enterprises of the food industry and light industry, have been established in the city. These include the Ural’skii Aluminum Plant, the Sinarskii Pipe Works, Stroimontazhkonstruktsiia Plant (producing equipment for nonferrous metallurgy enterprises), an electromechanical plant, a plant producing commercial equipment, an automobile repair plant, and a clothing factory. The Krasnogorskii Heat and Power Plant is located in the city. Educational institutions include the general technical department of the Urals Polytechnic Institute, an aluminum technicum, and a medical school. There is a dramatic theater and a museum of local lore in the city.
