(käm`pən), town (1994 pop. 32,550), Overijssel prov., central Netherlands, on the IJssel River, near the Ketelmeer. It is a trade and industrial center. Kampen was first mentioned in the 13th cent., and in the 15th cent. it was a member of the Hanseatic LeagueHanseatic League
, mercantile league of medieval German towns. It was amorphous in character; its origin cannot be dated exactly. Originally a Hansa was a company of merchants trading with foreign lands.
