intrinsic pathway Hematology An arm of the coagulation cascade, initiated by negatively charged surfaces–contact factors–eg, sulfatide micelles, kaolin which bind factor XII and HMW kininogen–HMWK; HMWK binds prekallikrein and factor XI, activating the latter; XIa then activates IX which in turn activates factor X, initiating the common pathway.
