Kerner Von Marilaun, Anton

 

Born Nov. 12, 1831, in Mautern; died June 22, 1898, in Vienna. Austrian botanist. Member of the Vienna Academy of Sciences (1872).

Kerner von Marilaun was a professor at the universities of Innsbruck (from 1860) and Vienna (from 1878). His principal works concern the systematics, geography, and ecology of flowering plants. One of the pioneers in the study of phytocoenoses, he introduced the concept of their stratification. Kerner von Marilaun discovered the phenomenon of leaf mosaics and drew attention to the role of hybridization in plant evolution.
