Joseph, Jacob

Joseph, Jacob

(?1840–1902) Orthodox rabbi; born in Vilnius, Lithuania. He was brought from Vilna, Russia (now Vilnius, Lithuania) in 1888 by the Association of Orthodox Congregations to become the Chief Rabbi of New York City. His presence was desired by the Orthodox Jews who were trying to resist Americanization by founding a Jewish community that would retain Eastern European Jewish institutions. These efforts were largely successful only with the older generation.
