Loschmidt, Joseph

 

Born Mar. 15, 1821, in Putschirn, now Počerná, Czechoslovakia; died July 8, 1895, in Vienna. Austrian physicist. Professor at the University of Vienna from 1868.

Loschmidt was the first to calculate the number of molecules in 1 cm3 of a gas (Loschmidt’s number) on the basis of the kinetic theory of gases (1865). He also carried out experimental studies on diffusion in gases.
