Joseph Luitpold

(pseudonym of Joseph Luitpold Stern). Born Apr. 16, 1886, in Vienna. Austrian poet, publicist, and critic.

Luitpold was the son of a labor leader. He studied law at the university and became a journalist in 1908. Luitpold emigrated when fascist Germany occupied Austria in 1938; he returned to Vienna in 1948 and wrote for the newspaper Volksstimme. From the 1920’s through the 1960’s Luitpold published collections of political poems and songs, cantatas and dramatic sketches, as well as two collections of ballads in which he glorified the struggle for the emancipation of mankind at various stages of history. His second collection contains the cycle Book About Children, which includes the ballad “Lenin.” Luitpold is also the author of historical antiwar sketches and historical dramas.
