Jacobsen, Hugh Newell

(1929–)Jacobsen briefly apprenticed to Philip Johnson, but later opened his practice in the Georgetown area of Washington, DC. Widely known for his modern pavilion-based residences, Jacobsen drew inspiration from the vernacular architecture of the American homestead, recalling the barns, detached kitchens, and smokehouses—the outbuildings—of rural America. Jacobsen designed the “1998 Life Dream House,” a promotion by Life magazine where famed architects designed homes and plans were made publicly available. He also designed the home of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis on Martha’s Vineyard in the early 1980s.
